BIO

24 year old Brooklyn singer-songwriter and drummer Maia Macdonald began her musical journey at age 7 after she was a given a drum on the streets of Barranquilla, Colombia. She soon began to teach herself to play the guitar using an old Spanish classical guitar forgotten in the attic. Years later, she fell in love with the music of Haiti and Brazil, and traveled to Port-Au-Prince to study folkloric drumming. At the same time, Maia continued writing and performing deeply personal folk songs grounded in rhythm. After abandoning dreams of moving west, Maia returned to New York with a serious drum-induced hand injury that threatened her ability to play. After successful tendon surgery, Maia entered the music scene and has quickly developed a loyal following through her shows at Union Hall, Pete's Candy Store, and The Knitting Factory. Maia Macdonald has spent 2008 recording "Islands Are Born", her upcoming EP that meditates on the isolation created within relationships and the the impact of geography on a life.
